Guest Writer: Libby!

Hey everyone! So I’m going to start posting work by guest authors! Here is the first piece written by Libby Skaff!! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

You’re the girl with the hidden wings

the one that no one sees in queens

you’re the one with the angelic voice the one that turns on all the voice your gorgeous inside and out

I know that without a doubt your smile makes it worth walking a mile

your soft touch helps the ones that are crushed and your eyes help the ones who cried you’re an angel not the one in the sky not the one who said goodbye but the one who saved lives the one who helped them not die

your wings come out when needed and are clipped when your sad not there when you’re mad that’s quite a shame for you to be like that.. But you’re an angel, a goddess one that’s oh so modest you make pain like a game your an angel sent from God that helped the ones that are shunned.

You’re Pretty For A Black Girl

Hi Everyone! So, I’ve had a realization– I started this blog because I wanted a platform to write about race, and I haven’t been doing that. To be perfectly honest with you, I haven’t been writing about uncomfortable topics like race because I am scared out of my mind. I’m scared of the world I live in, and I’m scared to be a black woman. But then I heard Mahogany L. Browne speak at Sarah Lawrence College and something clicked. I realized I shouldn’t be sitting here writing only about makeup, and don’t get me wrong, I love makeup but I also want to change the world. So, I’m going to write more about race no matter how scary it is. Thank you Mahogany. Here is a poem that I’m really proud of.

“You’re pretty for a black girl,” he says nonchalantly, adjusting the straps of his backpack of white privilege.

He’s the kind of person who actually relates to the saying “Land of the free”.

He looks like the kind of person who would say something as ignorant as,

“You’re pretty for a black girl.”

I heard

You’re not beautiful because of

Your mind or

The way you smile with your whole face or

How fiercely you love

I heard

You’re beautiful because

Your skin is light

Because

You wear your hair straight

Because

I can’t see your curves in that dress

You are beautiful because you are lighter than a paper bag from the grocery store.

You are beautiful because you were born to a white woman

That is what makes you beautiful.

I wish I had said,

You are wrong.

I am beautiful because of

My mind

And

The way I smile with my whole face

And

How I love so fiercely

I’m beautiful because

My skin is the perfect combination of my mother and father

And because

I wear my hair however the hell I want

And

I’m beautiful because of how I feel in my own body.

I am beautiful because

I am a black girl.

Interview With Ashley Tisdale

Hi, everyone! Here is an exclusive interview with Ashley Tisdale! If you want to know more information about Ashley’s makeup line, please keep reading!

Who was your first style icon?

My first style icon was Nicole Richie because of her California boho chic style.

What is the process for creating a makeup line like?
The process is long! I didn’t realize going into makeup that it takes a year just to do the formula for a lipstick, so knowing that, it took about two years to create my Illuminate by Ashley collection.
What makes Illuminate by Ashley Tisdale unique?
I think what makes it unique is the representation of me personally and of how I view makeup and how I like to use makeup. I think it has my California bronzy, glowy style, and at the same time I believe that makeup should Illuminate you and not just cover your features, so I’m really proud of this collection. Whether your’e someone that likes to wear a natural look or build coverage and color, I think this is a good collection for you.
In many interviews I’ve either read or watched, powerful and successful women are asked the question, “how do you juggle your personal life and work?” and men are never asked this question. Have you come across sexist inquiries such as this? And how do you handle them?
I think when people ask me “how do I juggle it all,” it’s more because I’m juggling running five businesses, as compared to being a woman doing what a man does. I can’t say I’ve thought of this until now, I’m obviously someone who loves to empower women, running an all women production company, and I think we’ve come a long way, and that it’s an exciting time for actresses and women in particular.
What advice do you have for young women who want to start their own business?
I would say to go for it! I’m always a big believer that if you have a passion and you’re willing to work hard, to definitely go for it, and don’t ever give up. In any business there are going to be frustrations but it’s overcoming those frustrations and having the bigger picture in mind and knowing that you’re doing something for a reason. Just know it’s going to be hard work, but as long as you live for that, then I say go for it!
What is your favorite product from Illuminate by Ashley Tisdale?
I have a couple! I love the beach goddess palette because it has the colors I like to do daily, but I also love the cream lip and cheek tints because I love the colors we’ve created and how light and shimmery they are, and I love how long they last!
What is your favorite makeup product NOT from Illuminate by Ashley?
My favorite non Illuminate product, I have a few 🙂 – I’m a huge fan of Giorgio Armani foundation and I like Anastasia products as well, I can’t live without her eyebrow pencil. I’m a huge fan of Ardell individual lashes, I don’t feel complete when going out for an event without lashes so I always love to do individuals.
What is it like to experience people responding to your makeup line?
It’s amazing! You know, creating something from nothing is scary and you’re vulnerable because it’s a piece of you, especially for how long it took. For two years you’re creating and you’re loving everything, but you have no idea how the fans and audience will respond. I love to see fans posting pictures. The fact that they think it’s quality makeup, that they love the packaging, all of these things were created by me, so to see people respond to it is probably the most rewarding thing!
I hope you guys enjoyed this! And thank you again, to Ashley!!
May your winged eyeliner be sharp and your wit sharper!

Illuminate By Ashley Tisdale

Hey, everyone! This is a very exciting blog post to write because it’s my first makeup review! Ashley was so nice and sent me her entire line to review for you guys! I have been waiting to write this post for months and I’m so happy that the time is finally here.

I’ve had Illuminate by Ashley Tisdale for about three weeks now, and I haven’t done one makeup look without it since I received the line! All of her products are so versatile and work really nicely with both the other products in the line and other makeup brands! All of the colors work really nicely with my skin tone and the staying power of each of these products are fantastic.

Ashley was on the Suite Life of Zack and Cody with my dad (he played Mr. Moseby) and I’ve grown up knowing her. Ever since I was little she has been one of my biggest role models, and I’m so happy and grateful that she sent me her line. Ashley, if you’re reading this I love you and am constantly amazed by everything that you do! Congratulations!!

Here are swatches of the lip glosses! All of the colors work really well with my skin tone and stay on for a really long time. If you apply one coat and blend that out with your finger, it will give you a lovely sheer coverage, but these glosses can also be layered for a more opaque and bold look. They also work really well with liquid lipsticks. I used layered Tan Lines over my Revlon Liquid lipstick for the “Adventures in Babysitting” Premier and it looked so pretty and it didn’t make the liquid lipstick crumbly or wipe off.

The Cream Lip and Cheek Tints are AMAZING. They look beautiful in a full coverage makeup look or applied on makeup free skin. My favorite shade is Cabana. It gives my skin the prettiest glow without looking like I’m actually wearing any blush. These last forever too. I wore Peaches n’ Cream to dinner one night when I was in the Virgin Islands and it was 95 out and humid, and that cream blush did not go anywhere.

From Top to Bottom: Espresso, Red Velvet, Coco, Cabana, Rosé, Peaches N Cream

These eyeshadows are so lovely. They are pigmented and STUNNING. I got caught in a thunder-storm in New York yesterday and it was pouring rain and I got completely soaked and the Illuminate Eyeshadow didn’t go anywhere. The palettes also contain blush, bronzer, and highlight and they are so beautiful. The powder blush looks really natural and pretty but if you layer it over the cream blush you can achieve a more dramatic look.

Here are swatches of the Beach Goddess Palette!

For the photo on the left here are the names from top to bottom: Dusk, 4 AM, Nocturnal, Moonlight, Wild Child, In the Stars.

Worthiness

Alright dudes. This is a different blog post and I’m scared to write it but I’m gonna do it anyway, because this is an important topic that more teenage girls need to speak about and understand. This topic is worthiness. I’ve been reading books written by the amazingly brilliant and honest, Brene Brown. A family friend sent us the link to her Ted Talk four years ago, and she has been a household name ever since. The saying, “lean into the discomfort” is used by my parents way too much for my liking. I’ve been wanting to start writing posts to talking about confidence and self-love, but I didn’t feel like those would mean anything. I’ve read a million magazine articles on how to become more confident in just ten simple steps! And none of them ever seem to be effective. I know that “believing in yourself” and “following your bliss” are great things, but how do I accomplish them? Seeing instructions in a magazine juxtaposed with pictures of some happy model make self-love much easier said than done. Believe me, if it were true that drinking a cup of green tea in the morning would change your entire day and center your chakras and align your chi and nothing would ever go wrong in the world, I wouldn’t be writing this post.

The truth is, realizing that you’re worthy and that you deserve love, respect, and happiness is really hard.

This is why I love The Gifts of Imperfection, Brene Brown understands how hard it can be to try and live an authentic lifestyle. Deciding to live life as a worthy and self accepting person is difficult. One of the interesting things that Brown talks about in her book The Gifts of Imperfection is the “when’s”:

“I’ll be happy when I get this job, when he texts me back, when I’m a size two.” Young girls are constantly told that they’ll be beautiful or worthy or sexy once they meet a certain standard.

For the past four years I’ve thought to myself, “I’ll be happy when I get the gap in my teeth fixed, I’ll be happy when I get my braces off, I’ll be happy when I get rid of my acne scars” and so on and so forth until I’ve dissected every part of my appearance. I’m tired of this. I’m so tired of waiting to be happy, and this is what I’ve learned from Brene Brown: you don’t have to wait to be happy. In fact, waiting to be happy is the wrong way to go about taking care of yourself emotionally. You have the power to be happy right now, and that all starts with your worthiness and your authenticity.  Brene Brown states in her book, The Gifts of Imperfection,

“Authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we should be, and fully embracing who we are.” – Brene Brown, The Gifts of Imperfection

I don’t know about you, but I would do just about anything to make sure that everyone likes me and that I fit in everywhere. I’ve spent most of my high school career trying to do that—slightly shifting my personality depending on what person or group of people I was with. But I’ve started to realize, with the help of Brene Brown, that trying to make everyone around you happy and comfortable is exhausting and not worth your time. Why chose to be around someone that makes you doubt yourself or feel stupid? As scary as it seems, it’s easier to let go of the person you think you should be, than holding onto a friendship or relationship that makes you question your self-worth. I’ve recently started focusing my attention on the friendships that make me the happiest, and that has helped me realize that I’m worthy.

I’m worthy of fantastic friendships, love, success, and happiness. Everyone is. We just need to realize it.

I’m especially excited about this post because I used Ashley Tisdale’s new makeup line, Illuminate by Ashley for my makeup. I have known Ashley since I was five years old, and she has always been one of my fashion icons. When I found out that she was creating a makeup line I was so happy for her and so excited to try it out. I will be posting a tutorial on this makeup look later this week!

My Skincare Routine

Hello everyone!

Here is my skincare routine. So, I have a pretty severe nickel allergy– we found out when I had braces– my gums got so swollen it put pressure on my sinuses and I got chronic migraines as well as acne. Fun times. Also, nickel is in everything, so I’m basically allergic to the world.

To combat my nickel / life allergy, I take medication for my skin as well as use topical skin medications presribed by my dermatologist. My skin has cleared up so much thanks to the medications from my dermatologist as well as these skincare products. My skin type is dry because of the medication I take, and because I never drink enough water ever. I don’t like water. Not the point of this post.

Anyway, here is my skincare routine. I hope you enjoy!

  1. I wash my face with the Trish McEvoy Cleansing Balm. I love this product because, even though it’s a balm, it doesn’t leave your skin feeling oily after you use it. It can also be used as a face mask!
  2. After cleansing, I use my skin medication, which you can only get through a prescription from your doctor or dermatologist.
  3. Now I put on sunscreen. I use SPF 50 on my face because I burn really easily. I actually just ran out of the sunscreen from my dermatologist’s office, but I’ve been really intereted in trying out this Coola Sunscreen.
  4. Then I moisturize. I just got this Neutrogena moisturizer for extra dry skin and I love it.
  5. To help with my acne scars, I use the John Masters Skincare Vitamin C Serum at night only. I’ve been using this serum for about three months and my scars have improved a lot.

What’s your favorite skincare product?

Bella’s Prom Makeup

Hey everyone! So I did my insanely gorgeous best friend’s makeup for her prom last week and I wanted to share it with you all! Honestly, I didn’t have to do much because Bella’s skin is flawless. I hope you guys enjoy!

May your winged eyeliner be sharp, and your wit sharper!

For Bella’s face makeup I used Pur Cosmetics BB Cream, Under Eye Concealer, and Concealer for contouring. The good news about these produts is that they’re high coverage wihtout looking cakey. Pur makes great BB cream that can be used on all kinds of skin while still looking natural. I used Cream Blush and Highlight on her, and then set that all with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Palette. Bella did her own eyebrows and she used Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz. For her eyes, I used a mix of the Morphe 35W Palette and the Urban Decay Naked2 Palette to create a gold eye look. I defined her eyes with Revlon Liquid Eyeliner, and Covergirl Mascara. Bella’s lipstick is MAC Matte Diva. I set all of her makeup with L’Oreal Infallible Setting Spray.

PROM 2016

Hello everyone! I’m so excited to finally share my makeup look and pictures from my Junior Prom which was last weekend! Most of the products are from Senna Cosmetics, which is an amazing makeup brand. I love them because all of their products are nickel free- their products are great for sensitive and allergic skin.
